Responding to the need for more public spaces in Dubai, Sculpture Park is poised to become the main activity hub of Dubai Creek. With the Jameel Arts Centre located in the north of the island, the project was designed as a habitable park that wouldn’t behave as a traditional “building”, but would complement the existing Arts Centre and generate activity on the island. The solution was to embed the architecture into the landscape, producing a design of “courtyards in the park”. The conditions of the desert climate define a design of both indoor and outdoor park experiences, which relate to one another through connecting courtyards. This strategy allows the park to offer pleasant conditions in all seasons, making the island an attraction for residents and tourists throughout the year. The program of the island highlights Emirati maritime history and its heritage of dhow building, the local and historical art of making boats.
